Privacy Policy
This is a personal website. This page explains what information it handles, why, and for how long. It describes what the site actually does; when that changes, this page changes with it. Last updated: 28 September 2026.
In short
No advertising, no advertising trackers, and no selling, renting or sharing of visitor data for marketing.
Visits are measured first-party: the data is stored only in this site’s own database. No third-party analytics service is used, and nothing follows you across other websites.
Your IP address is not stored in the site’s database.
You can switch off visit measurement on your browser at any time, with the control in Visitor analytics at the end of this page.
Information you choose to send
Some features ask you for information. It is used only for the purpose you sent it for:
Contact form: your name, email address and message (and organisation, if you give one), used to read and answer your message.
Newsletter: your email address and preferred language. You are subscribed only after confirming by email, and every newsletter includes a link to unsubscribe.
Perspectives (comments): your name, email address and comment. Once approved, your name and comment are shown publicly; your email address is never shown.
Visit measurement (analytics)
The site measures how its content is read, to learn what readers find useful and what to improve. The full description, and the switch to turn it off, are in Visitor analytics below. In short:
Your browser receives a random identifier in a first-party cookie. The database never stores that identifier, only a keyed one-way code derived from it, so visits can be counted without knowing who you are.
Recorded: pages viewed, active reading time and how far a page was scrolled, likes and dislikes, downloads, sharing (the method only), clicks on the site’s own navigation links, and the website address of outbound links.
Searches on the site are simplified in your browser before they are sent, and anything that looks like an email address, a phone number or a long number is replaced with “[redacted]”.
For about half of visits, page loading speed is recorded; technical errors are recorded as a type and a short code, never the error text.
Your country is derived from the network request, and your device and browser are recorded only as broad types (for example “mobile · Safari”).
Visits by the site’s own staff and by automated bots are not recorded.
Views and likes
The view and like counts shown on each item use the same identifier cookie, so that a reader is counted at most once every 30 minutes and can keep or change a vote. A vote is stored against a keyed code, not your identity. The site’s owner may choose to hide these counts or adjust the number displayed; the recorded counts and votes themselves are never altered.
Protection against abuse
To limit spam and abuse (for example, a flood of messages or votes from one place), the site keeps a keyed one-way code of your network address; these codes are deleted within about two days. A perspective keeps a similar code with it, to help deal with abuse. The address itself is never stored.
Cookies and your browser’s storage
The site sets no advertising cookies. It uses:
eng_vid — a random identifier for view counting, votes and visit measurement, kept for up to 12 months and sent only to the site’s own engagement address.
an_optout — set only when you choose not to be measured (and on the browsers of the site’s staff), kept for up to 12 months.
Sign-in cookies, for the site’s administrators only.
Your light or dark theme choice and reading text size may be remembered in your browser’s local storage. They stay on your device.
Global Privacy Control and opting out
If your browser sends the Global Privacy Control signal, your visits are counted with no visitor or session code at all. You can also switch measurement off on any browser with the control in Visitor analytics; it takes effect from the next page you open, and you can switch it back on the same way.
How long information is kept
Individual visit records: 90 days (the period can be shortened automatically if storage runs low). Technical error records: 30 days.
A visitor code not seen for 13 months is deleted.
Daily statistics that contain no visitor codes are kept for up to 25 months, and per-item daily totals for longer. Search terms used by fewer than two visitors are removed after 90 days.
Abuse-protection codes: deleted within about two days.
Contact messages, subscriptions and perspectives: until they are no longer needed, or until you ask for them to be deleted.
Services the site relies on
The site is hosted by Vercel, its database is provided by Supabase, and its emails (newsletter and confirmation messages) are sent through Resend. Like any website host, the hosting provider processes your IP address in order to deliver the pages, under its own policies. Visitor data is not sold or rented, and is not shared for advertising.
Links and embedded content
Links to other websites, and the sharing links for WhatsApp, LinkedIn and X, lead to services with their own privacy policies. Videos are embedded from YouTube (in its privacy-enhanced mode) or Vimeo (with do-not-track enabled); when you play one, that service’s policy applies. Sharing and newsletter links created by the site may carry a simple tag, such as utm_source=whatsapp, so that visits from them can be counted; the tag contains nothing about you.
Your choices and questions
You can switch off measurement, unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time, and ask about, correct or delete information you have sent. For any privacy question or request, please use the contact page.
Visitor analytics
This site measures its own visits to learn which content readers find useful. The measurement is first-party: the data goes only to this site's own database. There are no advertising trackers, no third-party analytics services, and nothing that follows you across other websites.
Your browser receives a random identifier in a cookie named eng_vid, kept for up to 12 months. The database never stores that identifier itself, only a keyed one-way code derived from it, so visits can be counted without knowing who you are. Your IP address is not stored: only the country is derived from it, and your device and browser are recorded as broad types, such as “mobile · Safari”.
We record the pages you view, how long a page was actively read and how far it was scrolled, likes and dislikes, file downloads, perspectives submitted (the item only), and clicks on sharing, series, related and outbound links (for outbound links, the website address only). Searches on the site are recorded after your browser has simplified them, and anything that looks like an email address, a phone number or a long number is replaced with “[redacted]” before it is sent. For about half of visits, page loading speed is recorded, and technical errors are recorded as a type and a short code, never the error text. On the first page of a visit we note where you came from: the referring website's address only, or a campaign tag in the link. We never record what you type in forms, who you share with, or any text you copy or share.
Individual visit records are deleted after 90 days, and technical error records after 30 days. A visitor code that has not been seen for 13 months is deleted. Daily statistics that contain no visitor codes are kept for up to 25 months, and search terms used by fewer than two visitors are removed after 90 days. Visits by the site's staff and by automated bots are excluded.
If your browser sends Global Privacy Control, analytics records your visits with no visitor or session code at all. The eng_vid cookie can still be set by the views and likes counter, which needs it to count each reader once and keep your vote; analytics does not use it for those visits.
